Bukovina

The painted monasteries of Bukovina are the first Romanian tourist destinations awarded with the “Golden Apple”, thought to be an Oscar prize in the field of tourism.

Bukovina (in German Buchenland-The land of beech trees), is the land of forests, painted monasteries, hayfields and tranquility of the mountains.

Bukovina is most widely known for monasteries built by former Moldavian princes and boyars (the Muşatins, Alexander the Good, Stephen the Great, Petru Rareş, Ștefan Tomșa, Alexander Lăpuşneanu, family Movileşti etc.), each with its specific color: Voroneţ (blue), Humor (red), Suceviţa (green), Moldova (yellow) and tree (color combination).

Voroneţ Monastery is one of the best known and most visited monasteries of Moldova, being appreciated for its uniqueness on the so-called color “Voroneţ blue”. It was called the Sistine Chapel of the East, because, apart from its famous color, the monastery can boast with an impressive number of paintings. Built in 1488, Voroneţ is the most valuable foundation of Stephen the Great.

Monastery Putna is one of the most famous churches of its kind in Moldova, built in 1466, as it was founded by Stephen the Great. The orthodox monastery of monks has the dedication day the Assumption and it is an important cultural and artistic center, not only religiously, including a museum rich in works of monks.

The Humor Monastery, is located near Suceava, as the monastery Voroneţ, but was founded by Toader Bubuiog in 1530 and has as dedication day the Assumption. The ruins of the monastic houses are here extremely important and interesting objectives, completing the landscape created by the churches “Assumption” and “St. George “, and by the two impressive towers.

Râşca Monastery is an Orthodox monastery of monks located in the village Râşca (in Suceava), at a distance of about 15 kilometers from the city Fălticeni. The monastery church is one of the medieval churches in northern Moldavia painted on the outside, being the only painted in the Byzantine style. The monastery is located on a wooded hill in the picturesque valley of the creek Râşca, an affluent of the river Moldova.

Egg Museum. On the E85, at the Customs, “in the heart of Bukovina”, you are invited to discover the largest collection of eggs from Romania and one of the most important in Europe. The museum is an important objective for discovering the traditions of the area, the craft of egg decorating that has travelled around the world! You will be able to work in the workshop, together with prof. Letiţia Orşivschi, an international artist, who will explain the meanings and symbols of Bukovina!

The Egg Museum is a unique museum and contains over 3000 eggs worldwide that prof. Letiţia Orşivschi has gathered in 12 years of participation in international exhibitions and salons.

Wood Art Museum in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, founded as a museum of ethnography and natural sciences, it was reinvented in 1967 as the Museum of wood; it is unique in the country and among the few in Europe as theme and value of the exhibits. It has a rich heritage that includes over 15.000 pieces of wood and is based on ethnographic collections.

The Wood Art Museum is a true encyclopedia of this ancient art, expressing and interpreting artistically the universe of the peasant life. Everything is conceived of wood as evidence of heat and nobility of the locals’ soul, authentic artisans, endowed with artistic traits, which amounts to typical ancient craft of wood.

The Museum Collections “Wood Art” are contained in 20 rooms, of which two of temporary exhibitions where the exhibits speak to the senses through the passion with which the craftsmen were able to convey it to the wood: artistic emotion, a certain sensitivity stated in the wood, since Câmpulung Moldovenesc was and still is a center of civilization and wood, showing the variety of occupations of locals from the lands of Rarăului and Giumălaului.

Bukovina Village Museum is an outdoor museum in the city of Suceava which highlights the cultural and architectural heritage of Bukovina folk. The open air museum is designed as a traditional Bukovina village and would encompass at the moment, when its organization would be completed, a number of 80 monuments of folk architecture: church, school, household farms, workshops, technical installations, tavern, a mine interior and route of Mocăniţă.

The Saline Cacica is one of the oldest salt mine from Europe recrystallized from brine and is unique because its galleries were dug manually without any machine. For the exploitation and removal of salt from the saline, coaches were not used, the only way of access being made of stairs of fir.

Sheltered from the noisy world, we find it decorated in the chapel of Saint Barbara, patron of miners, the dance hall that was used in the past to organize balls, currently being football field and a salty lake of about 2m deep. Their beauty is enhanced by the fact that this small underground city was created only by chisel and hammer. And moreover, the curative value of the air filled with minerals is undeniable. A few hours spent in the Salina help to clean the breath and the lungs to become stronger.

The Cell of Daniil the Hermit is a cave carved into a cliff on the valley of the stream Vişău, where has lived as a hermit Daniil the Hermit. It is at a distance of about 1 km of Monastery Putna (county Suceava). The Cell of Daniil the Hermit was included on The List of the historic monuments from Suceava county.
The mountains Rarău, the mountain pass Vatra Dornelor or Gura Humorului are places of a monumental beauty. Tourists and visitors of these blessed lands leave from here speechless, enriched by the splendor and uniqueness of this magical realm.
